A totally off-message blog as the new cricket season bursts into life with Twenty-20, one-dayers and Test matches, too much? NOPE!
No actual cricket is played up here in north Lanzarote, Haría, Maguez, Arrieta etc, but historians hint that there was once a game played between some English ex-pats and some holidaying Spanish. There is no actual documentation of the game but both sides (allegedly) claimed a famous victory celebrated in the only way, with a wine-tasting competition.
As an ex-player (opening batsmen) and cricket nut, these murky statistics fascinate me so when the first ball is launched in the Test Match (serious cricket), between England and South Africa on July 6th at Lords, this crazy info will pass through my mind.
A tough series with South Africa should be a cracker with the English side bristling with talent but the Saffies always being competitive and dangerous, especially at Lords, the Home of Cricket, they´ll come out punching.
And the Champions Trophy which we should have already won twice will be wide open with England expected to go deep into the tournament providing Iceland or Holland don´t cause an embarrassing obstruction.
The Canarians of course won´t have a clue what´s going on and I´m sure I´ll be wasting lots of breath trying to explain the quite complex rules of this wonderful game but I will certainly try.
A lot of wine will be drunk…
